October is National Orthodontic Health Month, which is a great opportunity to offer some timely tips for orthodontic health and obtaining a healthy, beautiful, confident smile for life.

Leamington native and orthodontist, Dr. Maxwell Abraham, from Abraham Orthodontics, recommends parents should schedule an orthodontic check-up for their children with an orthodontist by the age of 7 years old.  As highly trained dental specialists, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth, even while some baby teeth are still present. A check-up can reveal any current needs for treatment, counsel parents if treatment should be considered when the child is older, or provide the peace of mind that treatment may not be needed. Abraham Orthodontics provides complimentary exams for all patients, as well as a “Growing Smiles Club” for children that may not require treatment, but visit the new Leamington office at 185 Erie St. S (serving all of Windsor-Essex County, including Harrow ON) for growth and development check-ups every 6 to 12 months at no cost. Dr. Abraham works closely with family dentists to ensure a healthy and beautiful smile, however, a referral is not required to visit Dr. Abraham.
Advances in orthodontic treatment options allow for less frequent office visits and more discreet appliances – like clear aligners, such as Invisalign, or tooth-colored ceramic brackets – so adults can fit orthodontic treatment into their lifestyle more than ever. “Our philosophy of treatment is anchored by our belief that every child, teen, or adult that desires or requires treatment, can have it. As amazing their new smile will be, we never want it to be a burden on the family. In-office, customized financing for all budgets, as well as our complimentary exams is a step for removing barriers to orthodontic care.”
Dr. Abraham and his team will be providing seminars to various organizations, including health agencies, schools, churches as well as working together with Essex County family dentists to raise awareness in identifying children that require orthodontic treatment as well as the important need for the first exam by 7 years old.

Halloween is also around the corner, and adults are just as likely as children and teens to run into Halloween candy temptations in October. For existing and future orthodontic patients, the following will help prevent emergency orthodontic fixes:
* Avoid sticky situations. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include hard or chewy candies, caramel, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind) and jelly beans.
* Careful with crunchiness.  Patients want to steer away from hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially un-popped kernels). And, whether in orthodontic treatment or not, never chew ice.
* Not all Halloween candy is off-limits.  Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. Check out Abraham Orthodontics’ Facebook page for delicious #AOmazing recipes!
* Brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season, when teeth may receive more exposure to sweets that can cause cavities. Orthodontic patients should be especially conscientious about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

“We want kids (and adults) to have fun on Halloween,” says Dr. Abraham. “And there’s no need to feel left out. Patients are free to enjoy acceptable treats in moderation. The payoff is a healthy, beautiful smile. It’s always worth it in the end!”
